What is Upholstery and How do you pick the right Fabric?

You don’t want to be second-guessing your choice of upholstery fabric for a new sofa or armchair a few months after it comes on your doorstep.  If you choose the wrong colour or pattern, the entire space will suffer.

So, before you go shopping for a new upholstery fabric, keep reading to learn more about what to look for in terms of durability, comfort, and style. Here’s how to pick a cloth that you’ll be happy to live with for a long time.

  • DURABILITY CHECK

Before you buy any upholstery fabric, make sure you know whether it’s intended for mild, medium, or heavy use. This manner, you can eliminate solutions that may appear appealing on the surface but are prone to wear and tear.

Natural fibres are weaker than engineered fabrics. Cotton, while it appears to be the ideal choice for our tropical climate, should be limited to pillows and cushions. A family room couch made of a mix of cotton, rayon, and polyester, on the other hand, is a terrific, long-lasting option. If you have children or dogs, microfibre fabric, viscose, or leather are the best options.

  • PICK THE RIGHT COLOUR FOR THE SPACE

The mix of new age hues on historical furniture gives the space an urban, edgy feel. In a tiny room, light colours on massive furniture might make the area appear larger than it is. As a result, complement or contrast the furniture with cushions, throw rugs, mats, and other accessories in contrasting or complementary colours and patterns. Solid colours are ideal for this because they can be jazzed up with various coloured accents depending on the mood. Also, while around children and dogs, avoid finely coloured materials and opt for dark hues for camouflage.

  • CHECK FOR LEVEL OF MAINTENANCE

Even if you locate the perfect fabric that meets all of the above criteria, you must first determine how much wear and tear your sofa can withstand and whether you are willing to provide the necessary care. If at all feasible, obtain a sample of the cloth and stretch and compress it to observe changes.

If your furniture will be exposed to direct sunlight, natural materials such as cotton and linen should be avoided because they fade with time. Microfiber fabric and hypoallergenic cushion fill are ideal for allergy sufferers since they do not attract dust. Outdoor textiles that withstand stains, distressed leather, and vinyl are ideal for families with children and dogs.
